You’ve seen the programmes – call or text and you get to join in by voting or playing. These services all use premium rate. Premium rate costs between 10p to £1.50 for each go or for each minute (plus any network charges). There are also games that ask you to use the red button on Sky, some (but not all) of these use premium rate too so make sure you know if you have to pay before you press!

Remember, it’s always your choice if you want to take part. Make sure you understand the price, know what you are getting and are prepared to pay before you dial. Not 100% certain? Don’t call!

• Check the price
• Check you are old enough
• Check with the bill-payer before you dial!

When you watch these things on TV you might feel like you ought to join in, that you have a better chance than other people or that ‘time is limited’. Whatever happens, don’t be pushed into doing something you don’t want to do.

If the price is too written too small or spoken too fast to be understood then be careful. Make sure you know what it costs so you don’t end up with a surprise bill!

Never enter a competition if you are too young. You will always be asked for proof of your age so even if you get through and win you will not get the prize. Besides, there are lots of things out there specially made for you…
